The Democratic socialist Melat Kiros, a 29-year old lawyer turned doctoral student, defeated longtime House incumbent Diana DeGette in Colorado’s primary election on Tuesday. Diana DeGette had served for nearly 30 years, almost as long as Kiros has been alive.
Kiros won in Colorado’s CO-01 district, which is primarily based in the city and county of Denver. It’s urban and diverse, with a cook partisan voting index of D+21. Which means that district votes roughly 21 points more Democratic than the national average, which also makes it the most Democratic district in both Colorado, and in the Mountain West. The district was represented by Diana DeGette since 1997.
Melat Kiros, a newcomer, topped the 15-term incumbent in the Democratic primary and is poised to become the first Gen-Z woman in congress.
Manny Ruitnel won the Democratic primary in Colorado’s 8th District, defeating the former state Senator Shannon Bird. He’ll face Republican Gabe Evans in the fall. On the gubernatorial side Colorado AG Phil Weiser won the Democratic primary for governor defeating Senator Michael Bennet to replace term-limited Governor Jared Polis.
